Ramon Vila-Rovira was born on 14th May 1949 in Barcelona’s Gothic quarter.
After finishing his studies of Medicine, at the age of 30, Vila-Rovira began to feel an uncontrollable need to express himself artistically, looking for other realities and truths that shrinked away from him, and so decided to study in the school of Art Adelina Gaeta with the painter Joaquim Santaló; later on, and until 1988, he assisted to the Boter-Santaló Painters’ School, both Sanvicens’ disciples. During this initial period, the artists whom he deeply admired and who influenced him the most were Gimeno, Mir, Miró, Picasso, Sanvicens and Velázquez.
In 1989 he abandoned the figurative style to start on the abstract-expressionist period. His evolution towards form and material, a drastic and brave step, like his works, another proof of his personality. After he had abandoned figurative art, Ramon stepped into a world of recycled objects playing with texture, shape and colour contrasts, which seem to recall on the passing of time, on his interests, on his life experiences.
Ramon Vila-Rovira has managed to combine a vast professional career and intense family life with his other major passion, artistic creation, from the initial drawings and oil paintings to the more recent collages, abstractions and sculptures. As we can see from Vila-Rovira’s works, the artists who influence him most at the present time are Tàpies, Guinovart and Barceló.
